I understand some Reps are sending a letter to push for a public option in the Senate using reconciliation. That would be sweet if they go in that direction. But, do they have the guts?

Here's a petition asking congress to use reconciliation and pass a bill with a strong public option:

It is amazing that congress doesn't want to pass something that such a huge majority of Americans favor. But then, there's always the insurance and pharma lobby.

The enormous rate increases that health insurance companies are pushing through now reminds me of the days when auto liability insurance became mandatory. The insurers who raised their rates ahead of the legislation made a killing. It would be so good if we could pass a real public option that anyone could opt into, that would give the insurance companies a run for their money. I'm hoping, but not counting on it. We need 15 more senators to sign on.

I just made a contribution to Connie Saltonstall, who is challenging Bart Stupak in the upcoming primary. Stupak is trying to hold healthcare reform hostage to his anti-choice beliefs. He is trying to say that the senate bill needs additional prohibitions against the government paying for abortions, but he's lying about that - Here's the Senate legislation: if you want abortion coverage, available only through PRIVATE INSURANCE, you pay a dollar a month extra yourself. If you are poor and your premium's subsidized by the government, you are reimbursed for everything BUT the dollar.

(Though, personally, I think the poor should also be reimbursed for the dollar). In any case, we need to get rid of Stupak.

I forgot to post a link - http://www.actblue.com/directory/MI/all/fed-house - you can make a contribution to Connie Saltonstall if you care to.

My understanding is that Bart Stupak is trying to write in a provision that would prevent women from purchasing abortion coverage from private insurers, but he is presenting it as preventing public (taxpayer) funding for abortions. Is that the case, Nancy?

A central plank in the Democratic platform guarantees a woman's right to choose for herself. If Stupak is going to insist on ever more restricitive anti-choice language in the HC bill, then he should be booted by the Democratic party.

Yes Terry, that is correct.

The good news is we're up to 41 Senators supporting the public option now.

This is amazing. What seemed like a lost cause at one time could actually happen. Fingers crossed!

If Nancy Pelosi doesn't sell us out. What is she thinking?

Well, it looks like we can forget the public option for now. But if this healthcare bill doesn't pass, it's all over for the Democratic party, I think.

Me too, Terry. It's interesting (and scary) to see some of the extreme reaction to this. What are these people thinking? For many of them, it seems like an automatic reflex, not really any specific reasons.
