Another Miracle Product? (Not exactly, but it helps!)

DMAE, or dimethylaminoethanol, is a naturally-occuring substance that has been widely used for quite a few years. As a supplement, DMAE is used for joint health, depression, and mental awareness. As a topical skin treatment, some marketers have called it a “facelift in a jar”. Is it a scam?

Let’s be realistic, no topical product (or laser peel, for that matter) is going to give the same results as a surgical facelift. However, DMAE has been shown to tighten skin and reduce sagging. Because DMAE is a common substance, cosmetic companies have tried to dress it up in order to charge more for their product.  ( more...)

AVOID MAKING COMMON MISTAKES

In my book Making the Golden Years Golden, I help the reader develop plans for their future retirement. Women tend to be less prepared then men. In this article I address the women that are more likely to be less financially savvy, and thus make costly mistakes.

The statistics show that women live longer than men, on the average 8-10 years longer, 50 percent of marriages end in divorces, so you must be prepared to manage your finances wisely if you should be one of the women that are living on their her own.   ( more...)

Why We Get Sick

In this world none of us ever wants to be overtaken by illness. And it is ironic that when we lose our wellness, it is only in that very state of apathy and discomfort that we comprehend the merits of good health. And even an ailment as simple as the common cold is adequate to create distress virtually at all levels of our being. But how often have we have contemplated as to why we sometimes get sick?

Seven modes of acquiring disease
Ayurveda, which is the complete science of living the life, has established seven basic reasons as to why we fall ill.

Hereditary
Ailments like diabetes are believed to traverse through parental genes, which may cause an individual to be far more likely to suffer with the ailment.

Should We Fear The Sun?

I’m a fan of Dr. Michael Eades, and I regularly visit his blog: http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/ Dr. Mike’s writing style is breezy and amusing, while imparting a lot of health information. Lately, Dr. Mike has been talking about the current sun phobia, and the health benefits of regular (but moderate) sun exposure. While many dermatologists have jumped on the anti-sun bandwagon, and would have us apply SPF-60 before even passing by an open window, Dr. Mike points out that the benefits of sun exposure far outweigh the risks.

The book that Dr. Mike is recommending now is The Vitamin D Solution by Michael F. Holick, M.D., Ph.D.  ( more...)

When Your Escape Is Grounded: Staycation Advice

Thanks to the unpredictable economy, low-cost, stay-at-home vacations have become a dominant trend in travel—and will probably continue to flourish. But even these “staycations” have different levels of activities, spending and spirit. Whether you are going bare bones, middle-of-the-road or deluxe, here are some tips to make the most of your time off, even when you must stay put.

Staycation Basics

Establish a vacation mindset. Okay, so you aren’t jetting off to the French Riviera, but you aren’t punching in at the office either.  ( more...)

Fall Fashion Trends

In the midst of the relentless heat of summer, it’s fun to look forward to fall dressing. For the first time in quite a few years, I’m seeing some trends I like (along with a few to gladly pass by).

I detect a return to restraint after many seasons of shocking trends. Clothes have some structure, without looking too tight. Many of the newest skirts are at or slightly below the knee, flattering lengths that we can comfortably wear. In fact, I think the fashion philosophy of most women over 50 is comfort first, fashion only when it feels good. And, this year’s trends have a lot we can embrace.  ( more...)

How To Ask For A Raise Even Though It’s Not The Perfect Time (It never is!)

You’d probably love it if your boss walked up to you today and said, “I’ve decided to give you a raise, effectively immediately.” Don’t hold your breath. No one wants to spend any more money than they have to. So, you’re going to have to ask for a raise. Here’s my advice on how to do this. First, do your homework on what you should expect in the way of compensation. Be sure to consult Internet salary websites, such as Salary.com or Salary Center on Monster.com.  In the U.S. women are paid 77 cents for every dollar men make.  If you set your sites on what men are paid and expect the same, you probably won’t be disappointed.  Don’t mention gender or need—keep the salary negotiation to what you bring to the business.  ( more...)
