Winter Skin Revival
Winter Skin Revival

Around this time of year, skin starts looking pale and dull. If a visit to a spa isn’t in the cards, it’s a good time to do an at-home treatment. If you go to a day spa & get a microderm facial, that’s great. Otherwise, work on exfoliation at home to start. Neutrogenia has an at-home microderm kit that gets good results. You might also try Murad exfoliating facial wash. Beauty.com has a special deal going on now, if you order $150 in products you will receive a gift of a $200 beauty kit containing a huge selection of high-quality product samples. So, it might be worth it to make a list and stock up on your favorite products.

While you’re exfoliating your face, don’t neglect your body. You can use a commercial exfoliator, or you can try an olive oil and coffee grounds scrub. Put some newspaper down on the shower floor to catch the excess, make a paste of the grounds and oil, then scrub all over. Brush off the excess, pick up the newspaper, and rinse off.  ( more...)

Help For Winter Skin
Help For Winter Skin

I saw the post at Une Femme - http://www.unefemme.net/ - November 4, praising Dove’s Deep Moisture Body Wash, and now see that this product has also made More Magazine’s list of top ten skincare products, an impressive accomplishment, considering the other picks were very expensive facial products.

My body wash of choice has been Neutrogenia’s Rainbath (in the ORIGINAL scent) – I’ve used it for years. It seems to clean your skin without altering the Ph, and doesn’t leave a feeling of tightness.  ( more...)

The Beauty Queen and the Crone
The Beauty Queen and the Crone

I was born a twin and will always be one. That will never change. My twin sister Chrissy and I grew up sandwiched between an older and younger brother, dressed in matching dresses and sneakers. No one could tell us apart except that my mother dressed me in blue sneakers and Chrissy in red. It never made sense to us why we should wear different colors because we thought everyone should know who we were. Chrissy had a chipped tooth so we always had to show our smile – that got annoying after awhile.  ( more...)

Scientists’ Study of Twins Reminds Us of How to Look Younger
Scientists’ Study of Twins Reminds Us of How to Look Younger

Science reveals common sense to be fact! A study conducted by Dr. Bahman Guyuron and published in The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal researched the appearance of aging twins to determine why one half of the pair would be protected by time while the other would become wrinkled.

While the side-by-side slide shows can be shocking, the reasons behind the wrinkles are exactly what your mama warned you about. Keep reading to find out how some of the twins stayed young-looking:  ( more...)

Are Magazines Trying to Make Women Feel Ugly?
Are Magazines Trying to Make Women Feel Ugly?

Had it not been for the long lines at my local supermarket, I probably wouldn’t have written this article. I hate standing in line, especially without something to read, so I glanced at all the magazine covers and one popped out: New Beauty, Fall/Winter 2008. I hadn’t seen it before and the title, “Secrets to Looking Young at Any Age,” really pissed me off. I reacted this way because it reminded me of another magazine, More, November 2008, with another three women on the cover and the following title, “Breaking the Age Barrier.”

The cover of New Beauty had three women, just like the cover of More. The only difference between them was the age difference. In New Beauty, there was a fifteen-year age gap between Jennifer Aniston, 39, Christie Brinkley, 54, and Brooke Shields, 43.    ( more...)

Summer Legs
Summer Legs

Bare legs are a neccessity in summer, and women over 50 may have some issues with that. To start, you’ll probably want to use a self-tanner. I suspect that the color result may be affected by individual skin tone and chemistry, but here are some to try: More magazine recommends St. Tropez tanner - $37, and I’ve had good luck with Nivea - $10. The Nivea tanners come in fair-medium and medium-dark, it’s good for us lighter-skinned ladies to have that choice. Drugstore.com offers a number of other choices as well, so if you try one brand and don’t like the results, try another brand. If you have very dark or very light skin, you may want to skip this altogether. Self-tanners are drying, so be sure to use a good lotion in between tanner applications.  ( more...)

Winterize Your Skin
Winterize Your Skin

Women over 50 often notice their skin is drier than it used to be. The problem gets worse during the winter, with dry air indoors and out. Here are some tips I’ve gathered over the years:

First, you need to drink eight glasses of water daily. Your body needs this to be properly hydrated. This will help your skin, but drinking more than eight glasses won’t increase the benefit.  ( more...)

Hair-raising Tales for Women Over 50
Hair-raising Tales for Women Over 50

Women over 50 often experience thinning hair. This can be caused by hormonal changes such as decreasing estrogen, increased sensitivity to testerone, or low thyroid. Sometimes it’s just hereditary. I did experience hair thinning a few years back, and since I’ve always had somewhat thin, very fine hair, I’ve been dealing with this problem for at least 50 years now. I therefore consider myself an expert on this subject, and will now tell you all my secrets.   ( more...)

From Plain Jane to Beauty with the Makeover Guy
From Plain Jane to Beauty with the Makeover Guy

Christopher Hopkins, the "Makeover Guy" shows women how to look great by using techniques they can actually do themselves, presented in a way that is respectful and empathetic. What looked good when we were younger may no longer fit us in our middle years. This book covers choosing clothes that emphasize your good features and de-emphasizing what you want camouflaged. It also explains how to use makeup to look more attractive.  ( more...)
