Get Skype!

If you make a lot of long distance calls, you’ll want to look into Skype – it’s an internet phone service that lets you use your computer to make and receive phone calls. It’s easy to set up on your computer, all you need is an inexpensive microphone or headset that you can buy at Radio Shack or any other electronics store. Or, you can order all sorts of cool accessories directly from Skype – including a webcam!

The Skype program is free to download. Once you have done that and hooked up your microphone or headset, then you can start calling. If the person you call also has Skype, you can talk for however long you want, and it’s totally free. If the other person doesn’t have Skype, you can still call their landline or mobile phone, and the charge is just over 2 cents/minute. In addition to basic calls, you can do conferencing, call forwarding, and so on.

This is all so easy, if you don’t have Skype now, it’s worth looking into – visit the Skype website and browse around!

I have used Skype for years with great success. We have family overseas and can talk computer to computer endlessly at no cost. My computer to their landline is 2.1 cents per minute. This is not a mistake, although calling a cellphone is higher. I have now subscribed to Skype unlimited USA long distance calling for a year at a fee under $30 and save over $20 monthly on my landline. Don't know why everyone doesn't use Skype.

With Skype for iPhone you can make phone calls via internet on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch even though Touch is techincally not a phone. To make Skype calls from iPod Touch you just need a set of headphones with microphone built into earphone cords  and access to Wi-Fi network.  The voice quality was excellent when we tried it .

Fixed the problem - I checked settings/audio & found that the microphone device I had specified was overwritten by the Explorer installation, it had gone back to the default.

Skype is also a great place to store phone numbers. For people with hearing problems, voices over yor speakers is much easier than the telephone. No more holding an instrument to your ear.
