Fall Fashion Trends

In the midst of the relentless heat of summer, it’s fun to look forward to fall dressing. For the first time in quite a few years, I’m seeing some trends I like (along with a few to gladly pass by).

I detect a return to restraint after many seasons of shocking trends. Clothes have some structure, without looking too tight. Many of the newest skirts are at or slightly below the knee, flattering lengths that we can comfortably wear. In fact, I think the fashion philosophy of most women over 50 is comfort first, fashion only when it feels good. And, this year’s trends have a lot we can embrace.

We’ll be seeing a lot of plaids and prints, but combine these with tailored elements. A tailored plaid jacket with structured shoulders looks great with jeans or a slim skirt. If you have big shoulders, you’re fortunate. The rest of us can use a little shoulder padding, just enough to give us a stricter shape and balance out some extra padding in our hips.
You can also mix patterns for a fresh look. This ensemble by DKNY is probably a little “louder” than most of us will embrace, but notice the skirt length and scarf. Altogether very nice!
Vests are still “in”, and we love them! The right vest can make a dull outfit look fresh, especially if you add a plaid or paisley scarf. This picture shows a more “grunge” interpretation than we like, but you can imagine some of these elements with a more grownup styling.
Metallics are back, but in a restrained form. This ensemble by Carolina Herrera is lovely, and this is a look that many of us can actually wear!
You’ll also be seeing more lace, and you can add some lace or ruffle touches without getting too “frou-frou”, just combine these with plain elements.
We’ll be seeing some interesting fabrics and attention to detail. This ensemble by Anna Sui is a definite winner! Elegant, but looks very wearable (though I would like a slightly longer skirt).
Of course, there are a few trends to pass by – we’ll want to avoid plaid pants, and I think most of us can live without patterned legs.
Overall, these trends are a very pleasant surprise. After so many years of ignoring us women over 50, it looks like designers are finally starting to pay attention. These are designs that can be adapted to us, while still looking great on a 20 year-old.
